Primarily women aged 15-50 years, though men can also have POTS
1 to 3 million people in the U.S. are affected by POTS
Common triggers include viral illnesses (e.g., mononucleosis), pregnancy, head injuries, and autoimmune diseases (e.g., lupus, Sjögren's syndrome).
Causes of POTS:
Neuropathic POTS: Nerve damage affecting blood vessels
Hyperadrenergic POTS: Overactive nervous system
Hypovolemic POTS: Low blood volume
Autoimmunity: Growing evidence suggests immune system involvement
80% improvement rate with treatment, though symptoms may persist
Life expectancy is not affected, but quality of life can be impacted by symptoms
